Tensioner Spring
This guide covers replacing the belt tensioner spring on the Vision Miner 22IDEX V4 - both for the Y-axis belt tensioners and the tool belt (X/U-axis) tensioners. Replace the spring if it is worn or damaged, or to upgrade the weaker springs installed on machines with serial numbers below 296 - see Belt Tensioning for how to identify your tensioner type.
Before you begin - safety and risk
Read the Safety - Before You Begin article to understand the hazards involved in working on the Vision Miner 22IDEX V4 - including electrical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical risks. All procedures in this wiki are provided as recommendations only. By choosing to follow any procedure, you do so at your own risk.
Tools and Materials
- 2 mm Hex screwdriver - for the belt clamp screws
- 4 mm Hex screwdriver - for the M5x25 idler pulley screw
- Replacement tensioner spring
- Threadlocker (we recommend Loctite 243)
- Small container or magnetic tray (to hold screws and washers)
- Guitar tuning app on your phone (for setting belt tension to 65 Hz after reassembly)
1. Y-Axis Belt Tensioner Spring
Turn off the printer and unplug it before starting.
- Loosen the M3x10 countersunk screw that holds the toothed belt clamp - do not unscrew it all the way.
- Remove the belt from the clamp.
- Unscrew the belt tensioner and take the spacer washer off the screw - do not lose it.
- Take out the part together with the idler pulley.
- Unscrew the M5x25 button head screw and remove it together with the pulley.
Do not lose the washers
The idler pulley has washers on the screw. Keep them in a container - the pulley will not sit correctly without them.
- Take out the adjustment screw together with the spring. Replace the spring with the new one.
- Reassemble in reverse order. When reinstalling, apply threadlocker to the M5x25 button head screw threads before screwing it into the belt tensioner.
2. Tool Belt (X/U-Axis) Tensioner Spring
The tensioner part of the procedure is the same as for the Y-axis. The difference is how the belt is freed - the tool belts are held by a clamp plate with four screws at the back of the toolhead, and access differs between the two tools.
-
Free the belt from the toolhead clamp plate:
- Tool 0 (left): first remove the fan shroud and wire guard, disconnect the fan wire, and remove the Print Head Assembly. Then loosen the four screws on the belt clamp plate at the back and pull the belt free.
- Tool 1 (right): no disassembly needed - loosen the four screws on the belt clamp plate at the back of the machine and pull the belt free.
For the detailed steps, see the Belt Replacement Guide.
- Unscrew the belt tensioner and take the spacer washer off the screw - do not lose it.
- Take out the part together with the idler pulley.
- Unscrew the M5x25 button head screw and remove it together with the pulley. Do not lose the washers.
- Take out the adjustment screw together with the spring. Replace the spring with the new one.
- Reassemble in reverse order. When reinstalling, apply threadlocker to the M5x25 button head screw threads before screwing it into the belt tensioner. Re-clamp the belt as described in the Belt Replacement Guide - the short end sticks out ~10 mm (left side on Tool 0, right side on Tool 1), tighten the four clamp screws in a cross pattern.
3. Setting Belt Tension
After reassembly, set the belt tension to 65 Hz using a guitar tuning app. Follow the Belt Tensioning Guide for the full procedure. The spring must not be fully compressed - leave room for it to absorb slack over time.
