LED Troubleshooting

This guide covers the RGBW chamber lighting on the Vision Miner 22IDEX V4 - the LED bars that light the build chamber and signal the printer's status with color. Use it when the lighting does not turn on, one of the colors does not work, or the status color seems stuck.

How the Chamber Lighting Works

The LED strips are mounted on the printer's frame and share a common positive (+24V). Each color channel - white, red, green, and blue - is switched independently by its own output on the expansion board: white on OUT3, red on OUT6, green on OUT7, blue on OUT8. See the Wiring Schematic.

The white channel is the main chamber illumination. The red, green, and blue channels are the status lighting - the firmware mixes them to signal printer states with color.

The white brightness is adjustable from the Web Interface: in the fan controls you will find a fan named W LED - its slider controls the white lighting. If the chamber seems dim, check this slider first.

Normal Behavior

At power-on, the red lighting fades in and out as part of the startup sequence, and then the white lighting turns on - white is the default state during normal operation.

Whatever color the chamber shows, it should always be constant and saturated. If the lighting glows in an unusual, washed-out, or dim color, one of the color circuits is either shorted or not working - some channel is stuck on or missing from the mix.

Troubleshooting a Missing or Wrong Color

Chamber LEDs dark, but the boards are alive?

The chamber lighting is separate from the boards' own diagnostic LEDs. If the STATUS LEDs on the mainboard and expansion board are blinking steadily, the boards are running fine even when the chamber stays dark - continue with the steps below. If the boards show no signs of life, see Unresponsive Printer instead.

  1. Identify the failing channel. Determine which color is not lighting up. If the chamber shows a mixed, unusual color instead of the expected one, work out which colors it is actually mixed from - that tells you which channel is missing (or stuck on).

    The built-in LED test lights each channel one by one and is the fastest way to check all four: Macros > System > Calibration > QC > Test 1, skip the voltage test, then run the LED test. It shows white, then red, green, and blue, then all RGB channels together.

Dim colors during the LED test are normal

The test intentionally drives the red, green, and blue channels at a low percentage to reveal bright or dark spots on the strips. A dim but even glow is a pass; a channel that shows nothing at all is the failure you are looking for.

  1. Check the wires for pinching. Inspect the LED wires where they run past the lid hinge supports - the wires can get squeezed by the plastic spacers the hinges sit on. A pinched wire can kill one or several channels at once.

  1. Measure the output voltage. Go to the rear side of the machine, to the expansion board. Using the Wiring Schematic, measure the voltage on the output of the failing channel at the moment its color should be lit.

Live measurement

This measurement is done with the printer powered on. Mind the tools and your fingers around the powered board - do not short neighboring terminals with the multimeter probes.

  1. No voltage on a circuit that should be lit - the problem may be with the board. To confirm, run the swap test below: if the LED lights on another output, the strip is fine and the board output is dead. Contact our support team.
  2. Voltage is present, but the strip does not light - the problem is in the strip or its wire. The strip and its wire are a single assembly, so damage to either means replacing the whole strip. Inspect the wire between the expansion board and the strip for damage, and confirm with the swap test below.
  3. A single diode on the strip does not light (the rest of the strip works) - the strip must be replaced. See the LED Replacement guide.

Swap Test - Board Output or Strip?

The swap test isolates the failure without a multimeter. The LED wires plug into the expansion board outputs: white (brown + white pair) on OUT3, red (yellow wire) on OUT6, green (green wire) on OUT7, blue (gray wire) on OUT8.

  1. Run the built-in LED test (Macros > System > Calibration > QC > Test 1, skip the voltage test) and stop at a color that works - for example, leave the Red LED test prompt open. The red output (OUT6) is now held on.
  2. Keep OUT3 connected throughout the test - the white channel connector also carries the common wire for the strips.
  3. One by one, plug each color wire into the active output (OUT6). A healthy channel lights up in its own color (green wire shows green, gray wire shows blue). A wire that does not light on a known-working output means that channel of the strip (or its wire) is dead.
  4. To test the board side, do the reverse: advance the LED test to the failing color's prompt and plug a known-working wire into that output. If the working wire lights up, the board output is fine and the strip is at fault; if it stays dark, the output itself is dead - contact our support team.
